As a parent, pastor, and a committed Christian, I’ve watched our local churches emptying out, especially during and after the lockdowns, as more people are becoming disillusioned with going to church each year.

I love riding motorcycles, but it is definitely not the right vehicle for taking a family vacation.

But that is kind of what we expect to happen with our weekly church attendance!

We expect a single ‘vehicle’ to perfectly handle all of our ‘transportation’ needs.

The gospel DOES speak into every part of our lives... but we should never expect to fit all of life, and everything that the gospel touches and transforms, into a single weekly service...

MY STORY

I grew up going to church Sunday after Sunday. About an hour to an hour and a half each week. Discipleship, if and when it happened, was a series of classes, or maybe a 9-week curriculum that we went through. And if you were a rock star Christian, you learned how to take another person or two through the same materials. Boom! Now they’re discipled. Now they’re “mature”.

The problem with that…it didn’t really work.

Later, as a father and a pastor, I realized that in fact you cannot make a mature disciple, or lead anyone else to faith, by throwing out short rehearsed speeches, going over a short program sitting in a classroom or office, or by sitting in rows once a week on Sunday

And even if it did work, what about living my faith the other 6 days and 22 ½ hours of the week?!

The goal should be a lifestyle of discipleship and mission where our faith and the gospel touches down in everyday life... and in the normal rhythms we already live in with others in community. That is what is commonly called, living a “missional life.”

I want that. You want that!
